The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is composed of FCC-licensed Amateur Radio operators who have voluntarily registered their capabilities and equipment for public service communications duty and have been trained as communicators in public service emergency communications.

The primary responsibility of West Rock ARES is to furnish communications in the event of a disaster when regular communications fail or are inadequate and to supplement existing systems.  West Rock ARES also provides a weather spotter network to the National Weather Service (NWS) Skywarn program.

West Rockingham ARES functions under this Emergency Plan at the direction of the West Rockingham Emergency Coordinator (EC), who is appointed by the ARRL New Hampshire Section Emergency Coordinator (SEC).

Drills, training and instruction shall be carried out to ensure readiness to respond quickly in providing effective amateur emergency communications whenever an occasion may arise.

In an incident in which Amateur Radio might serve the community, West Rock ARES leadership may be alerted by any town Emergency Manager, city Emergency Manager, NH Bureau of Emergency Management, Red Cross, National Weather Service (NWS) or other served agency.

Weekly VHF Nets

The West Rockingham ARES VHF net meets every Sunday evening at 20:00 on the 146.850 repeater, courtesy of the Interstate Repeater Society.

This is a formal net that is open to all Amateurs interested in emergency communications. The ARES West Rockingham emergency coordinator, assistant coordinators, and specialists provide brief reports on current issues of interest to the group. Members also provide training to assist the membership in staying fresh.

An informal "chat time" provides an opportunity to discuss specific topics. For example, participants may discuss details of upcoming events, continue a "lessons learned" discussion or talk about the weather.
